Minding the Gap

Bing Liu, USA 2018, 93’
Joker Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood

Three guys from Rochford, Illinois. They don’t come from rich families and they struggle with problem at home—but they have an escape. Skateboard, partying together, and the mutual support among friends make their youth cool. However, time does not stand still and each of them must face the emerging adulthood. Keire, who struggles with financial and racial issues, gets his first job. Zach, a full-time partygoer, becomes a father. Bing records everything and his skateboarding video clips turn into a film about something bigger than just showing off on ramp. Eventually, he will have to center his camera on himself and on his familial trauma. Minding the Gap is a film not only full of youthful, unruly energy, but also uneasy psychoanalytic lesson given to American culture. Bing Liu’s first documentary turned out to be the cinematic event of last year—it was awarded on international film festivals, it also was nominated for an Academy Award and became one of Barack Obama’s favorite movies of 2018.
