Ben Is Back

Peter Hedges, USA 2018, 103’
Beautiful Boy Chef Flynn

The Burns family gets ready for Christmas, but a sudden appearance of the prodigal son Ben (nominated for an Academy Award for Manchester by the Sea Lucas Hedges, the son of the director) brings about more uncertainty than joy. The reason is simple—teenage Ben is a drug addict. Even though his mother (Julia Roberts) hastily tries to hide the drugs and wants to believe in her son’s recovery (apparently Ben has been clean for 77 days), the rest of the family maintains distance. After their painstakingly built, everyday normalcy meets the force of Ben’s addiction, there might nothing to left to salvage. In his most ambitious work since What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Peter Hedges alludes to his favorite theme—the family. At the same time, Hedges comes full circle and, in a way, returns to his 2003 movie Pieces of April in which an emotionally disturbed family also met at the holiday table.
